Aluminum Tilt & Turn Windows

Serving Downey CA

Aluminum tilt and turn windows pair the dual-action European window, one handle that swings the sash fully inward or tilts it from the top for ventilation, with a thermally broken aluminum frame built for slim sightlines, large spans, and zero maintenance. The result is arguably the highest-performing aluminum window on the market: a Uw as low as .17 with triple-pane glass, soundproofing to 47 dB, and the entire RAL color spectrum to specify from.

For modern architecture, long horizontal runs of glass, dark frames, minimal profiles, this is the window that delivers the look without surrendering the performance.

How the tilt & turn operation works

Like its wood counterpart, the aluminum tilt and turn is three windows in one, controlled by handle position: down locks the sash airtight against its seals; horizontal swings it fully inward for cleaning and maximum airflow; up tilts the top inward for secure, draft-free ventilation you can leave open. The full mechanics are covered on our Tilt & Turn Windows page — what changes here is the frame.

What "thermally broken" means — and why it matters

Aluminum conducts heat, which is why ordinary aluminum windows run cold, sweat with condensation, and leak energy. A thermally broken aluminum window interrupts that conduction path: insulating material separates the exterior and interior faces of the frame, so heat can’t travel through the metal. The HH frame goes further — a four-chamber coextruded hollow-chamber central gasket, glass-rebate insulation inserts, and a 9mm external glazing-system gasket work together to insulate the frame itself, producing a frame U-value (Uf) of .24 and a whole-window Uw of .17 with triple glazing.

In plain terms: the crisp, modern aluminum aesthetic with the thermal performance of a high-end European window.

Engineered for large glass and heavy sashes

Tilt & turn hardware locks at points on all four edges of the sash and is fully adjustable in three directions: left/right, up/down, in/out. Compared with standard American window hardware, it is extremely stable, which is exactly what large, heavy, triple-glazed sashes demand. That stability is what allows the aluminum tilt-and-turn to be built in extremely large sizes while remaining effortless to operate for decades.

Color: the full RAL range

Aluminum’s second advantage is finish freedom. Two methods, both highly weatherproof:

Anthracite grey, graphite black, bronze, or a custom architectural color — the frame becomes a design decision, not a constraint.

Sizes & configurations

  • Tilt-turn: 15″–61″ wide × 24″–96″ high
  • French tilt-turn: 30″–120″ wide × 24″–96″ high (floating astragal, no meeting post)
  • Fixed lite: up to 84″ × 140″ (multiple lites available)

Build as a single unit or mull side-by-side and in transom configurations across full elevations. Optional sill profiles are available for both operable and fixed units, and the easily handled frame installs flush with the wall exterior, at wall center, or anywhere between — the closer to center, the better the thermal performance.

Where aluminum tilt & turn windows excel

Specify aluminum tilt and turn for contemporary custom homes, large glazed elevations, view properties, and commercial projects — anywhere the design calls for slim dark frames, big glass, and a window that will never need refinishing. It is the natural companion to lift & slide and bifold door systems on modern indoor-outdoor builds, and the right answer when a client loves the wood tilt & turn’s function but wants a metal exterior with zero upkeep.

Designing with aluminum?

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminum tilt and turn windows energy efficient?

Yes — when thermally broken. HH aluminum tilt and turn windows achieve a Uw of .17 with triple-pane glass and a frame U-value of .24, thanks to a multi-chamber thermal break, triple gasketing, and multipoint perimeter locking.

What is a thermally broken aluminum window?

A thermally broken aluminum window places insulating material between the exterior and interior faces of the frame so heat cannot conduct through the metal — eliminating the cold frames, condensation, and energy loss of ordinary aluminum windows.

Aluminum vs wood tilt and turn — which should I choose?

Choose aluminum for slim modern sightlines, the full RAL color range, and a virtually maintenance-free exterior. Choose wood for natural warmth and the lowest U-value available (.16). Wood with aluminum cladding splits the difference.

How large can aluminum tilt and turn windows be built?

French tilt-turn configurations run to 120″ wide × 96″ high, and fixed lites to 84″ × 140″ — and units can be mulled together across entire elevations.

What colors are available?

The entire RAL color range via powder coating, plus anodized finishes — including matte, gloss, metallic, and textured surface effects.
